As l clear away the dead leaves around my garden, l notice
the new shoots of the snowdrops and daffodils that are appearing and
then, when l look, I see the yellow flowers of the primroses. This
helps me to connect with the eternal life of our planet and shows me
that nature carries on regardless of whatever else is happening.
The 12th day of Christmas has just passed, the time to
take down the decorations, cards and tree. On the 6th of January, here
in Herefordshire where l live, there were quite a few wassailing customs
taking place. It’s an amazing experience; the Morris dancers are present.
About 100 or more people take part in a torch lit procession to a local
orchard where the Morris dancers light 13 fires and bless the apple
trees with the cider made from last years harvest. Christmas cake is
offered, guns are fired, horns are blown and saucepans are hit to chase
away evil spirits. Stories are told and acted out on the theme of life
and death, helping us to connect with the continual cycles of life.
I love it; it makes me feel like l’m taking part in some really ancient
rite to the earth.
So much has happened in the world at large since the
last Moonthly report. Benazir Bhutto has been shot, who knows what
will happen in Pakistan. Kenya has seen the loss of hundreds of lives
and, here, in England we are being told in the news that lots of people
are in debt and that there will be more price rises on fuel and utility
bills. Mind you, if you read the front page of the Independent you’d
be glad that you’re not a battery hen.
Something l found very interesting about the chart of
the new Moon is that out of the personal planets ( Sun, Moon, Mercury,
Venus and Mars) only the Sun and Moon make an aspect to each other.
This suggests that even though this conjuction might affect us personally,
there’s a lot more going on collectively.
The Capricorn new Moon is the first lunation of 2008.
The Sun and Moon are together in the 10th house giving us the chance
to get back to basics, sort out our foundations and realize our limitations.
It’s a good time for the government to have a serious look at our infra
structure and think about where our resources come from. Saturn, the
ruler of Capricorn, is known as old father time and asks us to take
responsibility for our actions.
All the cardinal signs are on the angles: Aries is the
ruler of the ascendant and Mars, the chart ruler, is in Gemini in the
3rd retrograde. Capricorn is the ruler of the midheaven and Saturn
is in Virgo in the 6th retrograde. There is an emphasis in Aquarius
and all the planets are above the horizon except for Mars and Saturn.
All the planets apart from Mars are contained within the opposition
of Saturn and Uranus emphasizing the challenge of what’s been tried
and tested versus the new and alternative.
The energy of this chart is very out
there and very public, with lots of issues bubbling under the surface.
Issues which have been bubbling for a long time... Mars is in its
second of three oppositions with Pluto and we are being asked to
look at our beliefs and how we communicate. The issue of transport
will be an important topic especially public means of transport.
It’s mad that it’s still cheaper to fly than catch a train. Mars
relates to how we assert ourselves and Pluto is to do with what we
have buried. This combination asks us not to put things on the back
boiler. There is an amazing potential for transformation especially
on how we use the resources of the earth. Nature is calling to us,
asking us to reconnect with our planet; we can’t keep taking without
putting something back.
I leave you with a quote:
“only after the last tree has been cut down. Only after
the last river has been poisoned. Only after the last fish has been
caught. Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten”
From a Cree Indian Prophecy.
Due to the duality of Mars in Gemini, l leave you with
another quote from one of Carolyn Hilliers songs - The Mead Bench:
“Change is a door hanging wide open”
Happy New Moon
