The Moon is very high in the sky at the moment and will reach her highest on the 1st May.
2025 is the peak of the Moon’s 18.6 year cycle when the Moon’s orbit is the furthest away from the celestial equator so the Moon’s swing is at her most extreme. She swings from her highest to her lowest and back again so is the most noticeable in our sky
Here are three screenshots from Stellarium which show the Moon’s extreme height in our sky during May. This clearly shows the extremes – her highest and her lowest.
1st – HIGH
15th – LOW
28th – HIGH
Such an amazing opportunity to witness the peak of the Moon’s cycle!
1st MAY 15:22 – high Moon in the afternoon
15th MAY 01:47 – low Moon early in the morning – you’ll need a good view of the horizon.
28th MAY 12:47 – high Moon in the afternoon
The day before is New Moon so the Moon is conjunct the Sun and you won’t be able to see her. However, she will still reach high in our sky over the next few days as a crescent Moon.
Back in 2006, we travelled up to the Callanish stone circle in the Outer Hebrides to witness the lowest Full Moon in the 18.6 year lunar cycle. We’re now really excited to be preparing to make that journey once again – a whole lunar cycle later… We begin our journey in less than 4 weeks so we’re now on a count down. ..
