Oh for a rest within the comforting energy of Cancer as she closes her shell around us and comfort and security seep into our minds and bodies. Maybe we can close our eyes and sense the warm and fluffy energy surrounding us. Let’s stay here for ever ……. If only. The energy of the New Moon in Cancer on the 24th June takes us to our inner centre of safety with which to begin the lunar month. Like welcoming soft and warm water in a bath on a cold winter’s day, like gentle rain on a parched landscape, beautiful, mysterious and nurturing, the sign of Cancer, ruled by the Moon herself, reminds us of all we value most in our homes, our families, our friends and all the places we feel most safe in. “It will all be all right,” she whispers. Can we believe her?
Cancer is a Cardinal Water sign. Water focusses on the emotions and feelings and Cardinality prompts the initiation of new projects and ventures. This New Moon sets the nature of a new scene and provides a space within which we can reevaluate our needs, our security and our innermost values. But the best mother in the world, whilst loving us and providing security, can sometimes be too forgiving, too unrealistic in her reassurances. We need to reassess the reality of our sense of security and place our intentions for action within the framework we find ourselves. How we behave, the choices we make and what we intend to do as we move from this homely energy of safety, is up to us, both as individuals and collectively. The energy begins the month and builds towards the date of the Full Moon in Capricorn on the 9th July (when lines – and structures may be drawn).
The image is of a fulsome young mother at the peak of her beauty. She cares deeply about her children, about their development and their security. They play around her feet in the light of the warm summer sun. She is nurturing and meticulous about creating a safe environment and future for herself and her children. She looks after them – emotionally and physically. The Summer Solstice, when the Sun culminates in energy, entered the sign of Cancer and is at his highest in the sky for us in the Northern hemisphere, happened only 3 days before. This New Moon is charged with beautiful and bright energy. A peak of potential optimism, positivity and love surrounds us.
Let’s open ourselves to the energy of this Cancerian New Moon and tune in to it before it starts its journey at 3.30am on the morning of the 24th – so that our intentions and wishes use her gentle, motherly energy in the most positive way possible:
As I open myself to the energy of this New Moon, I will observe my emerging and swirling emotions and use them as an impetus for change. What are the issues I see?
How can I evolve these emotions? How can I heal my wounds?
What do I value most about my life? How can I ensure that I protect what I value for the future?
What makes me feel safe? How can I improve my own security – emotionally and physically, without retreating into my shell? How can I best love and care for myself?
Who and what do I need to nurture in terms of the people I care for and ideas that I might want to develop for the future?
Within the centre of my emotional being, what do I need to do to change and reprogram?
This New Moon gives us an opportunity to ‘touch base’ with the source of our deepest feelings and to strengthen the foundations of our emotional lives. Whatever our childhood experiences may have been, here’s a chance to meet again with our mother – and family circumstances we experienced. Renewed strength can come from acknowledged vulnerability. Add to this the fact that this New Moon is also square Chiron and conjunct Mercury, it is indeed possible that repressed past wounds might pass more easily than usual from sub conscious to consciousness. We are likely to communicate our feelings with ease but there’s also a possibility that these communications could be explosive. (Mars is 10 degrees away from the New Moon position.)
IN A MUNDANE KIND OF WAY
Explosiveness and the potential for global volatility could grow as a T square develops (Mars opposite Pluto, both square Jupiter) around us in the Universe. We will be challenged (New Moon square Jupiter) to find fair solutions to problems. Clear and honest communication may be the key to softening potential volatility. There’s an urgent need to talk about, not only our own – but also others’ feelings and needs. We are witnessing not only our own pain but that of many others around the globe. This will be felt strongly by many of us who retain empathy with the unfairness experienced by others.
Cancerian energy also focusses on boundaries – both the creation of them and the dissolving and reforming of those that have become unnecessary and irrelevant. Passionate emotions might sometimes seem overwhelming. At the time of writing, the results of the British General Election are not yet known – but the polarization of opinion characterized by the Gemini New Moon last month will have reached crisis by the time of the Full Moon in Sagittarius (9th June). Whatever the result of the election, the influence of Cancer on both the Solstice and the New Moon (24th June) may have us either running back to our secure shells, closing the door and hoping that the world might go away – or experiencing renewed emotional clarity and more awareness of the urgent need to ensure that all people are treated with fairness and equality. As a result of possible new and caring initiatives, there’s potential that the feelings between conflicting religions and class interests will be calmed. The impetus of Cardinal Cancer could contribute to a ‘New World Order’ of change, more security and Peace for all. This is our time, Fellow Optimists! Onwards and upwards!
It’s important to remember to nourish and honour ourselves at this time so that we reinforce the strength of our own emotional foundations. Here’s a chance to cleanse both our own and our collective DNA, to heal our past and to head towards the future with an awareness of the caring and loving nature of the Universe within which we all live. Humanity is one huge family so here’s an opportunity to change outdated habits and patterns at this New Moon. We need to reprogram both ourselves and the global family! There is a North American saying that underlines a relevant principle:
“Do nothing that will harm the children.”
If children are not nurtured and protected, they become sickly and may even die. Children, in this sense, are not only small people who need care and love. They are also new ideas and maxims for different factions in society to live alongside each harmoniously – and creative ideas that need loving care in order to grow and blossom.
