Soft, lush and beautiful – New Moon in Cancer brings the energy of loving care, protection – and the need to examine the nature and wellbeing of what we call ‘home’ – both personally and in terms of the Earth we live on. The New Moon is confronted and surrounded by energies that threaten her security and will dismantle barriers if they can – and yet her strength is enormous as the Sun eclipses. Barriers and boundaries, on personal and global levels, might need to dissolve before they can be rebuilt but she will make sure this happens with empathy and sensitivity. Our sense of security has a chance to renew with an increased awareness of the need for mutual emotional respect and for the nurture of all of us.
Cancer is a Feminine, Cardinal, Water sign. Ruled by the Moon herself, she is emotional and instinctive. The image is of a mother – kind and protective. Her emotions might ebb and flow but she loves with the strength of oceans. She feeds, she embraces, she looks after our needs. In line, however, with the symbol of The Crab, she fights hard when she or her family are threatened or her boundaries are breached and she might nip the aggressor painfully with her claws – and not let go for a while until they learns their lesson! Her soft, vulnerable centre needs constant protection and, if she thinks she might be defeated by the danger around her, she will retreat determinedly into her impenetrable shell.
Watch out World! The Astrological Weather Forecast predicts that emotional equilibrium will be affected by strong Planetary storms! It’s particularly important to remember the cyclical nature of Moon energy this month, accentuated as it is, by its position in Cancer. Moods are likely to fluctuate wildly as we react to the energy around us. The New Moon in Cancer could cause us all to seesaw between roles as ‘Kind Protector’ and ‘Wild Woman Ninja’ within seconds as we are affected by the ominous presence of the Mars/Mercury conjunction and the ongoing transformational South Node/Saturn/Pluto conjunction in opposition on 3rd July. A lesson is to be learned from the consequences of threats to security. Become more centred and secure! Nothing less than the safety of the whole family of humanity is at stake and we can’t underestimate the potential power of nipping crab claws and the hard, unmoving shell of the Mother when she exercises her fierce instinct to defend and protect.
On a personal level, we are called upon to engage our most eclectic and compassionate values in our interactions and to nurture ourselves and our families so that we stay safe. We need to focus on improving our own homes and our care for the earth around us. Even though our emotions might fluctuate and we could find ourselves remembering past pain, wounds and separations, we can use gentle creativity, motivated from our hearts’ yearning for peace and happiness, to find new ways to love and care for the world around us.
Every new initiative begun at the beginning of this New Moon Cycle has extra strength and the potency from the Solar Eclipse to power our wishes and intentions for the six months ahead. Consider carefully any new beginnings you may wish to make this month because they will be rocket-charged. This New Moon/Solar Eclipse might seek out our weaknesses and press our buttons of insecurity but we have a unique opportunity to search deeply within ourselves and to discover our true place in the world. Where exactly do we ‘belong’? How strong is the basis from which everything we think and do emerges? Here are some suggestions for preparing for the New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Cancer:
Suggested meditation: With eyes closed, imagine you are walking around your home. Taking in the details of each room and any outside space, is everything as you would like it to be, given the boundaries of your circumstances? Do you feel centred here – safe, protected, loved? Now, using your instincts and inspiration, visualise your home as a sanctuary, beautiful, calm and nurturing – for everyone who enters it. Is there anything you would like to add to the space?
- ‘Home’ is the physical space in which we live – but it’s also the personality we inhabit. What can you do this month in order to enhance your home (within and without) and to create a peaceful, happy, inspiring and productive base for the future?
- What makes you feel strong? Do you need to create more supportive structures?
- What makes you feel safe and happy?
- Which boundaries do you truly need – and which are unnecessary?
- What enhances the vibrancy of your soul, your physicality, your mental health and your emotions? How can you become stronger and more secure?
- What do you need – at soul level, in your physicality, within your mind and emotions and within your physical home in order for you to feel most nurtured? What intentions can you make to feed these needs?
- Do you need to release any negative emotional sensitivity from your past?
IN A MUNDANE KIND OF WAY
The Mars/Mercury conjunction in Leo at the time of New Moon/Solar Eclipse creates the apex of a powerful triangle at the point of New Moon. (Mars enters Leo 00.19) The Mars/Mercury conjunction is sesqui-quadrate both Neptune (Pisces) and Jupiter (Sagittarius) which are square each other with the Pluto/Saturn conjunction (Capricorn) in between. This is a very powerful configuration! The opposition continues to reflect the ever increasing strength of the opposition of ‘left’ and ‘right-wing’ views that blatantly affect existing extremities in attitudes (racism, women’s issues, attitudes to the environmental crisis and to wealth and equality). By the evening of 4th July, the Moon will have passed over the ‘sharp’ focus of the triangle (the Mars/Mercury conjunction). Emotions, globally, are likely to peak in strength and volatility, fuelled by fierce discussion and correspondence. The potential rage this combination indicates, could result in an arrogant, unexpected displays of violence.
Global security is threatened and various factions of the world’s administration might be thrown even further into ‘defence’ and ‘attack’ mode! But perhaps ‘authority’ will become aware of the importance of dignity and grace (Leo) in their negotiations this month – even if they are interrupted occasionally by theatrical displays of arrogance and posturing. The crisis could at times be volatile and dangerous as forces ebb and flow. You never know – perhaps the New Moon will encourage leaders to take their roles as Mothers, Fathers, Protectors and Carers of the World seriously and exercise care and compassion in manifesting changes. Hopefully, volatile exchanges will remain ‘only’ verbal and will be tempered by gentle Cancerian energy.
On a personal level, caution, insightfulness, awareness, gentleness, caring! It’s too easy to over-react to perceived security threats with ‘crab-claw’ reactions that create even more walls and barriers between people – and between nations. Time to radiate some summer happiness, compassion and love! Confronting our own vulnerability and reassessing our places in the world with empathy can only be life-enhancing.
I’m going to trust in the integrity of the Cancerian energy that initiates this Lunar Month. Here’s hoping we will be graced with plenty of sun and good humour! It’s time to enjoy the nature that surrounds us and the homes and families where we find nurture – while staying aware of the importance of valuing our own clear boundaries. Here’s an opportunity to take advantage of the present potential for effective New Beginnings.
