Skye to Lewis

We’ve now left our beautiful cabin on the western coast of Scotland through the mountains to arrive at Skye where we sailed to Harris.

Old Man of Storr

Whilst on Skye, we visited the Old Man of Storr. A fifty five meter high pinnacle of basalt rock which is all that remains of a 2800 million year old volcanic plug. We really wanted to bring our dog Undle here as Cairns were originally bred on Skye. However, we weren’t expecting it to be so busy. When we visited 19 years ago, we pulled up in a lay-by and walked up to the stones. It was only us. Now there’s a massive amount of people. Car parking for over a hundred cars, a cafe and visitors centre.

We walked up to the stones with hundreds of people. It’s made us question the whole journey. We saw this journey as a pilgrimage but at what cost to Mother Earth has this been? All the driving, all the polluting. It has felt like we’ve been on a conveyer belt of adventurers. Thousands of people travelling, whether it be for an adventure or a pilgrimage. All looking to connect with nature and have a great experience.

In all of the places we’ve stayed, the local people we’ve talked to are finding it very difficult to live with so many tourists. Congestion, pollution, lack of consideration. We thought this was just places like the south coast where we live but, in fact, the whole country is in this situation.

storr

We had an amazing time at the Old Man of Storr. The weather was so good and the views were breath taking. Mission accomplished.

We had a delicious roast meal from a van in the Co-op car park and then headed to the boat to sail over to Harris. To our relief our sailing was very calm.

Harris

We arrived at Harris late so drove straight through the mountains to Lewis. On our way to our destination, we were joined by the Moon which we haven’t seen since leaving home. It felt like she was welcoming us. Then we saw a stag at the side of the road. We’ve arrived safely and are now with friends which is a massive relief.

Callanish

Although the lowest Moon Full Moon is on Wednesday night through to Thursday morning, the Moon will be very low for the evenings either side of this. We will be looking at the weather to see when the clouds clear. If clear on Tuesday night, we might go to Callanish as we really haven’t had many clear nights at all, the whole time we’ve been away.

Fingers crossed…
